Learning to recognize these hidden draws, and to play them aggressively when your <a href=\"https:\/\/pokercoaching.com\/blog\/ranges-in-poker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Ranges In Poker: A Complete Guide\">range<\/a> supports it, is one of the cleaner ways to add expected value without taking on reckless risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today we will analyze a 30bb 3-bet pot where we open T<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2665<\/mark>9<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2665<\/mark> under the gun, get 3-bet by the cutoff, and call to see a Q86 rainbow flop. We check, the cutoff fires a small continuation bet, and now we have to decide what to do with our double gutshot straight draw. The stacks are shallow at 30bb and the correct answer is more aggressive than most players expect. UTG checks, cutoff bets 4.1bb<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Preflop<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We open T9s under the gun for 2.3bb and the cutoff makes it 6bb. Against that <a href=\"https:\/\/pokercoaching.com\/blog\/3-bet-poker-strategy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"3-Bet Poker Strategy: A Complete Guide\">3-bet<\/a>, the suited connectors and one-gappers around our hand all live in a mixed region. The solver splits QTs, JTs, and T9s between calling and folding rather than picking one answer for all of them. T9s specifically is the weakest of that group here, folding roughly 64% of the time and calling about 36%, but it is a defensible call against a normal-sized 3-bet, especially against opponents who will not play perfectly after the flop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bigger lesson is about the option we are not taking. A common leak is to take a hand like T9s and 4-bet jam it as a bluff, hoping to fold out the weaker offsuit broadways and 8x combinations that the cutoff used to 3-bet. At 30bb that is simply not a good play. T9s is a call or a fold. As your opponent re-raises larger, you fold it more often; as they re-raise smaller, you call more often. Shoving turns a hand with real postflop playability into a pure bluff that gets called by everything ahead of it. We call and take a flop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flop: Q\u26608<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2665<\/mark>6<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0693e3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2666<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The flop comes Q\u2660 8<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2665<\/mark> 6<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0693e3\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2666<\/mark>, a rainbow board, and the pot is 16.3bb. This is one of those spots where the under the gun caller actually has a meaningful leading range. It feels strange to donk into the preflop aggressor, but the math supports it. Our flatting range is full of strong Queens that the cutoff cannot easily have, because they would often 4-bet them preflop. A-Q is top pair, top kicker and one of our strongest holdings, K-Q and Q-J are premium top pairs, and we also hold 99, 98, 87, and assorted pairs that connect well with this texture. Hands with overcards or a backdoor straight or flush draw round out a range that wants to apply pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because of that nut advantage, the solver recommends leading roughly 72% of the time with a small size on this flop. Almost nobody does it. Most players check this board every single time and surrender the initiative to the 3-bettor. Recognizing that you are allowed to lead here, and that your range is strong enough to do it, is exactly the kind of edge that solver study uncovers. The cutoff obliges with a small <a href=\"https:\/\/pokercoaching.com\/blog\/c-betting-in-poker\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Continuation Betting In Poker: A Complete Guide\">continuation bet<\/a> of 4.1bb, about a quarter of the pot. With T<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2665<\/mark>9<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2665<\/mark> on Q86, a Jack completes 8-9-T-J-Q and a 7 completes 6-7-8-9-T. That is two separate four-card straight draws stacked on top of each other, a true double gutshot straight draw worth eight clean outs, every one of which makes the nut straight. On top of that we have a backdoor heart flush draw. For a hand that looks like nothing, that is an enormous amount of equity, and it is all equity that improves to the best possible holding rather than a second-best one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we check and face the 4.1bb bet, the aggregate strategy for our entire range is to fold about 26%, call about 58%, and raise about 17% of the time, split between a small raise to 12.7bb and an all-in raise to 23bb. The raising range is built to be polarized: a mix of strong top pairs and a small number of high-equity semi-bluffs. The trap many players fall into is raising too many medium-strength hands and not enough draws, which leaves the bluffing side of the range underweight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the draw earns its keep. T9&#8217;s eight clean outs beat J-T&#8217;s four. J-T is only a single gutshot needing a nine for 8-9-T-J-Q, which is why the solver jams T9 and mostly calls J-T. Both draw cleanly to the nuts, but T9 has roughly twice as many clean outs. J-T leans toward calling and keeping the pot manageable, while T9 leans hard toward jamming. Our T<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2665<\/mark>9<mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#cf2e2e\" class=\"has-inline-color\">\u2665<\/mark> never folds: it jams all-in for 23bb roughly 48% of the time, raises small to 12.7bb another 22%, and otherwise calls, landing on the aggressive side about 70% of the time with zero folds. It is the single most logical semi-bluff in the range and the only one with strong enough equity to anchor the aggressive line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also helps to think about what the cutoff actually holds when they fire that small bet into our check. Their range is wide here, full of overcards, missed broadways, and the occasional set, overpair, or top pair that wants to bet for value. A meaningful share of overcard and weak top-pair combinations cannot comfortably continue against a 23bb shove on a Queen-high board. These are the hands that were betting to deny our equity rather than for thin value. By choosing the all-in size over a smaller raise, we maximize the immediate fold equity against exactly those hands while keeping our own decision simple: there is no awkward turn to navigate, no second barrel to face, and no reverse-implied-odds spots to worry about later in the hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason the jam works so well at 30bb is that the price is right. We are calling a 4.1bb bet only to put in 23bb total, which is not an egregiously large raise relative to the pot. We risk that amount to win the current pot immediately a large share of the time, and when we get called we still retain around a third of the equity against the hands that continue, with those eight outs to the nuts, plus the backdoor flush. We are rarely drawing dead, and the fold equity tips a marginal-looking shove into a clearly profitable one.
