When you hold the nut advantage on a paired flop, you can check-raise relentlessly and put the preflop raiser in a miserable spot with most of their range. The trick is choosing bluffs that can keep barreling, and knowing exactly when a scary river turns your busted hand into a perfect jam. This tournament hand is a clinic in attacking from the big blind with a check-raise bluff.

Today we will analyze a 50bb 8-handed tournament hand where Hero defends 8♠7♦ in the big blind, the lojack opens, and the board runs 9♠9♥4♠, 2♥, A♠. Hero check-raises the paired flop with a backdoor flush draw, checks the turn when nothing improves, and then check-raise jams the ace river as a bluff. This hand shows why the big blind attacks this flop, why the turn is a disciplined give-up, and why a spade blocker plus the right kicker makes the river jam work.

Assumptions

Stacks: 50bb effective

Format: 8-handed tournament (MTT)

Positions: BB (Hero) vs LJ (Villain)

Action: LJ raises, BB calls

Flop: 9♠9♥4♠ (Pot: 5.9bb): BB checks, LJ bets 1.5bb, BB raises to 5.1bb, LJ calls

Turn: 2♥ (Pot: 16.1bb): BB checks, LJ checks

River: A♠ (Pot: 24.2bb after the bet): BB checks, LJ bets 8.1bb, BB raises all in to 42.7bb, LJ folds

Preflop

The lojack opens and Hero defends 8♠7♦ from the big blind, a routine wide defend getting a discount to close the action. Hero will be out of position with an offsuit hand that has nothing going for it except one spade, but as the flop shows, that single spade ends up being the most important card in the hand.

Flop: 9♠9♥4♠

The flop is a paired, two-tone 994, and Hero has nothing but 8-high with a backdoor spade flush draw. Despite that, the right play is aggression, and the reason is range structure. The big blind actually holds the nut advantage here: Hero can have every offsuit nine-x as well as the full set of suited nines, while the lojack only opens the suited nines. The big blind has far more trips than the raiser, as PeakGTO confirms.

When you have the nut advantage but not the equity advantage, the opponent bets small and often, and the correct counter is to check-raise and attack. The lojack is value betting hands like ace-high and KQo into a board where Hero is loaded with trips, so a check-raise puts that whole range in a tough spot. The key is that out-of-position check-raise bluffs must have equity, because you need to be able to keep barreling on later cards. 87o qualifies precisely because of the spade: the backdoor flush draw gives Hero enough turn cards to continue. Hero check-raises the small continuation bet to 5.1bb, the lojack calls, and the pot grows to 16.1bb.

That distinction is what separates a punt from a follow-up bluff. Check-raise any old garbage on a weak board and you end up either barreling off into nothing or giving up so often that the line stops being credible. The single spade in 87 is not much, but it is enough to make the hand a legitimate check-raise rather than a pure punt, and it is the difference between a bluff you can follow up and one you cannot.

Turn: 2♥

The 2♥ is a brick that does nothing for Hero, and this is a clear check. There is an important point here: telling the trips story on the flop does not obligate you to keep telling it on every turn. Players who feel they must keep firing after a flop check-raise play these spots terribly, and if that is your mindset you should not be check-raising so widely in the first place. The check-raise was made with hands that could turn equity, and 87 did not turn any, so it is essentially dead against the lojack’s continuing range and gains nothing by bluffing again.

The hands that do keep barreling are the ones that actually improved: 53, A3, or A5 that turned a straight draw, and the heart combinations like T8, J8, or Qx of hearts that turned a flush draw, plus the spade combos from the flop. 87 without new equity checks and hopes to see a cheap river. Hero checks it through, the lojack checks behind, and Hero already booked plenty of value on the flop by forcing the opponent’s junky offsuit hands to fold. Knowing when to abandon a bluff is just as important as knowing when to start one, and giving up here keeps Hero from torching chips on a hopeless second barrel. The action goes to the river with the range now more defined.

River: A♠

The A♠ arrives and the lojack bets 8.1bb. The ace is actually the worst rank card in the deck for Hero’s range, because the lojack’s most common hand at this point is an offsuit ace, like ATo or AJo, that check-called the flop, checked back the turn, and just rivered top pair. For that reason, Hero’s first instinct should be to check rather than lead, since the card is bad for the range and there are too many single-spade bluff combos to fire all of them. But once the lojack bets, the picture changes for this specific hand.

87 with the spade becomes a majority check-raise jam. It unblocks the offsuit aces and weak high cards Hero wants to fold out, and crucially it blocks the lojack’s spade flushes, since holding the eight of spades removes some of the suited-eight combinations that just made a flush. The story is believable too, because Hero can easily show up with rivered flushes, boats, and tricky nines that played this exact way. Hero check-raises all in to 42.7bb, and the lojack has to fold its rivered top pair. One sharp live-poker tip: do not telegraph your decision. If you take a long time and then check with your body language screaming that you have given up, you forfeit the chance to recognize a spot like this and turn it into a check-jam. Stay locked in, keep the story believable, and these GTO bluffs become available.
