Players make top pair, bet once or twice, and then check the river out of caution, leaving value on the table again and again. Top pair is a value hand, and against a capped opponent it often wants to bet for value street after street. The key is using the right size so the worse hands keep paying. This hand is a clean demonstration of betting top pair for three streets the correct way.

Today we will analyze a 100bb 6-handed hand where Hero opens Q♠J♠ from the lojack, the button calls, and the board runs J♣T♦4♥, 2♠, 3♥. Hero flops top pair with a queen kicker, c-bets small, then value bets the turn and river at medium sizes as the board bricks. This hand shows why top pair with a strong kicker is a three-street value bet against a capped caller, why the sizing should stay medium rather than huge, and why checking the river is the costly mistake to avoid.

Assumptions

Stacks: 100bb effective

Format: 6-handed cash game

Positions: LJ (Hero) vs BTN (Villain)

Action: LJ raises, BTN calls

Flop: J♣T♦4♥ (Pot: 6.5bb): LJ bets 1.6bb, BTN calls

Turn: 2♠ (Pot: 9.7bb): LJ bets 5.8bb, BTN calls

River: 3♥ (Pot: 21.3bb): LJ bets 12.8bb, BTN calls

Preflop

Hero opens Q♠J♠ from the lojack and the button calls. QJs is a standard open from this position, even though it will play out of position against the button for the rest of the hand. The button’s flat-calling range is wide but capped, since the strongest hands would three-bet preflop, and that capping is what eventually lets a hand like top pair bet three times for value.

Flop: J♣T♦4♥

Hero flops top pair with the queen kicker, holding three to a straight that picks up a true open-ended draw only if a king or a nine arrives later. This is actually a board where Hero should check around 80% of the time, because the lojack does not have a big equity or nut advantage; the button holds plenty of the sets and two pairs too. When Hero does bet, the right size is small, around 25% of the pot, and a bigger size accomplishes little. QJ itself bets only about 20% of the time and often leans toward checking, but betting is reasonable.

The important discipline is range construction. Avoid betting every strong hand, because if Hero bets all the aces, kings, queens, and jacks, the continuation betting range becomes far too strong and the checking range gets so weak that good players run it over. Strong-but-vulnerable hands need to be split between betting and checking. Hero bets the small 1.6bb, and the button calls. A key detail makes Hero love the spot: QJ blocks the button’s AJ, KJ, and QQ, so when the button just calls, its range leans toward tens and weaker holdings that Hero is often ahead of.

What makes betting reasonable despite the checking-heavy default is not extra draw equity, since QJ is essentially just top pair here. It is the combination of the small size, sound range construction, and those blocker effects. Hero wins money now from worse pairs while keeping the cost low on a board where the button holds plenty of strong hands, and a king or a nine on a later street would still upgrade the holding to a genuine straight draw as a small bonus rather than the reason to bet.

Turn: 2♠

The 2♠ is a brick, and now Hero has to decide whether to keep betting. When you bet the flop small and the opponent only calls, their range is usually marginal, and betting into it with an already-favored range is profitable. Hero’s range has about 54% equity here, because the button would have three-bet preflop or raised the flop with most of its best hands, leaving it capped. PeakGTO bets this turn around 88% of the time, and against a straightforward opponent who raises strong hands and only calls with marginal ones, you can simply bet everything.

Sizing is where QJ needs care. The solver uses bets all over the map on this turn because it is barreling many different categories of hands, but QJ is a medium-strength hand, so it wants a medium size, about 60% of the pot. You do not want to overbet QJ: a huge bet folds out the very hands you are trying to get value from. A genuinely strong hand like QQ overbets or pots, because it can get called by jacks and tens alike, but QJ can really only get called by tens and the occasional weaker jack, so it bets medium. The 60% size also keeps the button’s draws and floats in the pot at a price they are happy to pay, which is exactly what Hero wants, because those hands miss far more often than they hit and pay off again on a brick river. Hero bets 5.8bb and the button calls again.

This is a useful mental model for the whole hand: match your size to how many worse hands can call. Reading where your hand sits in the strength order, and then choosing the size that the next-worse hand will still pay, is the entire skill of value betting.

River: 3♥

The 3♥ bricks, Hero still has top pair, and the decision is whether to fire a third barrel or check it back. This is the exact spot players misplay constantly. They collect value on the flop and turn, then check the river with top pair to play it safe. But the solver bets QJ, and every hand better than it, essentially 100% of the time. Checking and calling looks fine because QJ will always call a bet, yet betting simply makes more money against a capped, calling-heavy opponent.

The size stays small or medium, never big. Hero bets 12.8bb, about 60% of the pot, getting called by weaker jacks and tens, whereas a pot-sized or overbet would fold those exact hands out. The river betting range also includes bluffs, mainly the missed king-highs from K9 through K5, plus KQ and AQ, which keeps the value bets from being too transparent. Live cash players in particular do not raise the river nearly often enough, so there is no reason to get fancy: value bet 60% pot and let the tens and weak jacks pay you off. If the rare raise comes and you are forced to fold the bottom of your value range, that is perfectly fine. The cardinal sin, in solid GTO terms, is betting the flop and turn for value and then checking the river. Hero bets, the button calls, and the third street of value goes straight into Hero’s stack.

Key Takeaways

Flop: On this board the lojack checks often and bets small when it does.
