Flush draws, straight draws and overcards with backdoor draws are the usual candidates, hands that aren’t yet one of the made poker hands but can become one.

It gives you two ways to win. Your opponent folds, and you take the pot right away, or your opponent calls, and you hit your draw on a later street.

A pure bluff has only the first way. If you bet the river with a missed draw and get called, you lose every time. That’s why semi-bluffs mostly happen on the flop and turn, while the river is where bluffs become pure bluffs.

The Math Behind a Semi-Bluff

A pure bluff has to work often enough to pay for the times it fails. The break-even point is your bet divided by the pot after your bet.

Bet size

Your opponent must fold more than

A quarter of the pot

20%

Half the pot

33%

Three quarters of the pot

43%

The size of the pot

50%

A semi-bluff needs your opponent to fold less often, because you still win some of the hands where you get called.

Here’s a turn example. The pot is 20 big blinds and you have 20 left. You hold 9-8 of hearts on K♥-5♥-2♣-3♦ and your opponent has ace-king. You go all in.

As a pure bluff, this shove needs your opponent to fold half the time. With the flush draw, you win about 20% of the time when called, and that cuts the folds you need to about 28%. On the flop, where your draw has two cards to come, you need even fewer.

That’s the whole case for semi-bluffing. Fold equity and your hand’s equity add together, so plays that would lose as pure bluffs can make money as semi-bluffs.

Which Draws Make the Best Semi-Bluffs

Not every draw should bet or raise. The best semi-bluffs come from the two ends of your drawing range, and the middle often does better by calling.

Strong Draws That Can Get It All In

Combo draws like a flush draw plus an open-ended straight draw are so strong that they’re often ahead. With 9-8 of spades on K♠-7♦-6♠, you’re about a 57% favorite against ace-king. Raise these happily, because if your opponent shoves, you call.

The nut flush draw with an overcard, and a pair plus a flush draw, belong here too.

Weak Draws You Can Fold

The other good group is draws that don’t have the pot odds to keep calling. Weak gutshots, backdoor flush draws with an overcard, and low draws that can fold to a re-raise all work.

They make good semi-bluffs because folding them to a re-raise costs you almost nothing. And if you never raise these hands, your raises contain only strong hands and opponents can fold everything but the nuts against them.

Good Draws That Would Have to Fold

The trouble is the middle. A decent flush draw or open-ended straight draw with nothing else often has around 30 to 35% equity. If you raise it and get shoved on, you may be getting just the wrong price to call, and folding that much equity is a disaster.

When stacks are shallow or you’re in a 3-bet pot, these draws usually do better by calling. Our guide to how to play a flush draw goes through exactly when to raise them and when to call.

When to Semi-Bluff

The draw is only half the decision. These conditions make semi-bluffs work much better.

Heads-Up, Not Multiway

A semi-bluff needs folds, and every extra player makes folds less likely. In a three-way pot, someone usually has a hand they won’t let go of. Semi-bluff mostly heads-up and play draws more passively in multiway pots.

Against Players Who Can Fold

Semi-bluffs print against tight, straightforward players who fold everything but strong hands. Against calling stations who never fold a pair, your fold equity disappears. Bet your strong draws for value against them and stop raising weak draws.

Out of Position More Than in Position

In position, you can call with a draw and keep your options, like taking a free card on the turn. Out of position, check-calling and missing leaves you guessing. That’s why you should check-raise draws more often from the big blind and raise them less often when you’re the one in position.

When the Board Supports Your Story

Your semi-bluff is more believable when your range has plenty of strong hands on that board. As the big blind defending on 7-6-3, you have sets, two pairs and straights that the preflop raiser rarely has, so your raise looks real. On K-Q-5, you have few strong hands, and a raise with a small draw gets called by every king.

When Stacks Leave You Room

Think about the shove before you raise. With deep stacks, a raise leaves plenty of room to call or fold later. With shallow stacks, a raise often commits you, which is fine with a combo draw and a mistake with a middling one.

Semi-Bluffing on the Turn and River

On the turn, keep betting the draws that are still strong, especially ones that picked up extra outs, like a gutshot turning into an open-ender. Give up more often with weak draws that missed, because your opponent’s calling range is now stronger.

If the draw misses on the river, the semi-bluff is over, and any bet is a pure bluff. Choose those carefully. Bluff with busted draws that don’t hold cards your opponent’s folding hands need, and check the ones that can win at showdown. Blockers decide a lot of these spots.

You can see the whole line in action, from a flop check-raise with a gutshot to a river shove with a busted draw, in our semi-bluff check-raise hand breakdown.

Common Semi-Bluffing Mistakes

In my experience, most players raise their best hands and their best draws and never their junky ones, so their raises are easy to read. These are the other leaks that show up most.

Raising a good draw that has to fold to a shove. Call those instead, especially in 3-bet pots and with short stacks.

Semi-bluffing multiway. Two or three opponents rarely all fold.

Semi-bluffing calling stations. If they never fold, your semi-bluff is just a bet with the worst hand.

Raising every draw. If all your draws raise, your calls never contain a flush draw and opponents bet freely when the flush comes.

Continuing to barrel after the draw misses without a plan. A missed draw on the river is a pure bluff and needs its own reasons.

Conclusion

The best semi-bluffs are your strongest draws, which are happy to get it all in, and your weakest draws, which are happy to fold. The middle draws often do better by calling.

Use them heads-up, against players who fold, and more from out of position. And always ask what you’ll do if your opponent shoves.

Once you think of a semi-bluff as fold equity plus your hand’s equity, it stops feeling like a risky bluff and starts looking like what it is, one of the most profitable bets in the game.
