What Changed for Sweepstakes Poker in Maryland
Maryland has tried hard to shut down sweepstakes poker sites, and it came close in 2026.
- April 2026. Both sweepstakes ban bills died in the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee when the session ended on April 13. Source, SBC Americas, April 17, 2026
- March 2026. The House passed HB 295, the agency’s own bill banning multiple-currency games, 105 to 24 on March 20. It passed HB 1226, the Illegal Online Gambling Enforcement Act, 134 to 2 on March 23.
- November 2025. The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency sent VGW a second cease and desist letter over Chumba and LuckyLand, with a 10 day deadline. Source, SBC Americas, November 21, 2025
- 2025. The agency sent letters to about a dozen operators in January and to VGW in March. Its director later said about two thirds of the recipients didn’t comply.
So Maryland sits in a gray zone. There’s no law that names sweepstakes games, but the regulator treats them as unlicensed gambling and keeps sending letters telling operators to stop.
The agency backed HB 295 itself, so expect another attempt when the Legislature returns in January 2027. If a ban passes, rooms that accept Maryland today would likely leave.
Maryland Online Poker Law in Plain English
Maryland has no law that licenses online poker, and the gaming agency doesn’t regulate any online poker site. Real money poker is legal only in person, at the state’s licensed casinos.
The state’s main gambling crime, Criminal Law section 12-102, is aimed at people who run betting operations. It isn’t written for the internet, and we couldn’t find a Maryland law aimed at people who play online.
That isn’t the same as approval. An offshore or sweepstakes site you play on has no Maryland license, and the state can’t step in for you.
Can I Play PokerStars, WSOP or GGPoker in Maryland?
No. PokerStars, WSOP Online and BetMGM Poker only run in states that license online poker, and Maryland isn’t one of them. GGPoker doesn’t accept US players at all.

Live poker is legal at Maryland’s licensed casinos, and the big rooms are all between Baltimore and Washington.

Will Maryland Legalize Online Poker?
Not in 2026. SB 884, the Internet Poker Authorization and Regulation Act, was filed and then withdrawn by its sponsor. A broader online gaming bill, SB 885, didn’t advance.
There’s a bigger hurdle too. Maryland’s past gambling expansions went to the voters, and the 2026 bill to put online gaming on the ballot, HB 1255, stalled in committee.
