Overpair Definition – Learn What Is an Overpair in Poker

The term overpair is used in community card games, primarily Texas Hold’em, to describe a pair held by the player that’s higher than any of the community cards.

For example, if you’re dealt pocket nines and the flop comes 5-3-7, you’re holding an overpair to the board as all community cards are lower than nine.

Generally speaking, an overpair is a strong hand in Texas Hold’em as it beats all one-pair hands. However, much like so many other things, this is very situational, depending on the board, betting, and player tendencies.
