How Sweepstakes Poker Works
Sweepstakes poker sites operate in most states because you never have to buy anything to play. They use two kinds of coins.
- Gold Coins are for fun only. You can buy more, but you can’t cash them out.
- Sweeps Coins come free, as a bonus with coin packages or by a free entry method such as a mail-in request. Once you’ve played them through, you can redeem them for prizes under the site’s rules.
That no-purchase-necessary setup is how these sites argue they fall under sweepstakes law rather than gambling law. Alabama hasn’t passed a law that names sweepstakes games, so the model hasn’t been tested in its courts.
ClubWPT Gold works differently. It moved away from the two-coin setup in 2025 and now uses a single currency called Chips, tied to a poker training membership.

What Changed for Online Poker in Alabama
Nothing has changed for online poker itself. The pressure on sweepstakes sites in Alabama comes from private lawsuits, not from the state.
- September 2026. VGW, the company behind Global Poker and other sweepstakes brands, was reported to have given about $351,000 to Alabama political campaigns this cycle. Source, Covers, September 4, 2026

- January 2026. 21 new lawsuits were filed against sweepstakes operators, taking the total past 40. They use an old Alabama law that lets people sue to get gambling losses back. Source, CasinoBeats, January 7, 2026
That law is Ala. Code 8-1-150. It lets a player, or someone acting for the family, sue to recover money lost gambling. We haven’t seen a court ruling yet on whether sweepstakes casinos count as gambling under it.
A few sweepstakes casino brands have blocked Alabama. None of the three poker rooms on this page has.
Can I Play PokerStars, WSOP or GGPoker in Alabama?
No. PokerStars, WSOP Online and BetMGM Poker only run in states that license online poker, and Alabama isn’t one of them. GGPoker doesn’t accept US players at all.

Lottery bills have cleared the House before and then stalled in the Senate. We couldn’t find any online poker or online casino bill in the 2026 session.
