How Sweepstakes Poker Works
Sweepstakes poker sites use two currencies. One is for fun only, and you can buy more of it in packs.
The other is a sweepstakes currency you get free with those packs, through promotions or by mail. Winnings in that currency can be redeemed for cash prizes once you’ve verified your account.
ClubWPT Gold works differently. It moved away from the two-coin setup in 2025 and now uses a single currency called Chips, tied to a poker training membership.
Because you never have to buy anything to play for prizes, the sites say they run legal sweepstakes rather than gambling. Colorado hasn’t challenged that so far.
Colorado Online Poker Law in Plain English
Colorado only allows the gambling its constitution and laws authorize. Casino gaming is limited to three mountain towns, and online casino games, poker included, aren’t on the list.

Sports betting is the exception. Voters approved it in 2019, and it’s been legal online and in casinos since May 1, 2020, under the Division of Gaming.
Sweepstakes sites sit in a gray area. No Colorado law bans or licenses them, and we couldn’t find any enforcement action against them. A review of the 2026 Digest of Bills found no new law that mentions sweepstakes.
The state has gone after physical sweepstakes cafes in the past, and some analysts think the same laws could be used against online sites. That hasn’t happened. Source, BettingUSA, updated October 2026
Colorado’s general gambling law wasn’t written with online play in mind, and we couldn’t find a case of a player being charged for playing poker online.
Can I Play PokerStars, WSOP or GGPoker in Colorado?
No. PokerStars, WSOP Online and BetMGM Poker only run in states that license online poker, and Colorado isn’t one of them. GGPoker doesn’t accept US players at all.
