What Changed for Sweepstakes Poker in Iowa
Sweepstakes poker is still available in Iowa, but the rules around it got tighter this year.
- July 2026. SF 2289 took effect on July 1. It lets the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission issue cease and desist orders to operators it suspects of offering gambling without a license, and go to court for an injunction. Source, Covers, May 19, 2026

SF 2289 isn’t a sweepstakes ban. It doesn’t name sweepstakes games as illegal. It gives the regulator faster tools against any site it decides is unlicensed gambling.
We haven’t found any public cease and desist order the commission has sent under the new law so far. None of the poker rooms on our list has left Iowa, and they still accept the state under their own terms.
That could change if the commission starts using its new power. If a room you use announces an exit, log in and check its redemption page.
Can I Play PokerStars, WSOP or GGPoker in Iowa?
No. PokerStars, WSOP Online and BetMGM Poker only run in states that license online poker, and Iowa isn’t one of them. GGPoker doesn’t accept US players at all.
You can play those licensed sites while you’re physically inside a state that has them. Michigan is the closest, with WSOP, BetMGM and PokerStars. See our Michigan poker guide.

Live poker is legal at Iowa’s licensed casinos, and there are rooms in most corners of the state.
