A poker backer is a person who provides funding for a player in return for a share of that player’s profits. In other words, the backer supplies a bankroll, while the player provides his or her skills and time.
A common arrangement between a backer and a poker player will be 50/50, where the backer provides all the money the player needs to enter tournaments or cash games, and, in return, that player gives 50% of their profits to the backer. Players usually have deals with makeup, so you always need to consider whether it is worth it.
This practice is known as backing, and it is very common in the poker world, especially at higher stakes and nosebleeds. Big backing funds even back multiple players. For the player, this type of arrangement provides financial stability and often allows them to move up the stakes faster.
