Early Position Definition – Learn What Is An Early Position in Poker

The term early position in poker describes players who are first to act before the flop. In general, a poker table is divided into three positions: early, middle, and late.

Depending on the number of players at the tables, there are usually two or three players who are in an early position. On a full-ring table, there are three early position spots, usually referred to as Under the Gun (UTG), UTG+1, and UTG+2.

You’ll often find the term early position in hand descriptions. For example, you could say something like – A player raised from an early position, and I decided to just call from the big blind with AQ instead of 3-betting.
