The term pocket pair is most often used in Texas Hold’em to describe a situation when a player is dealt two cards of the same rank. In this instance, the player will start the hand with a pair in the hole or in the pocket.
On average, you’ll get a pocket pair once in every 17 hands, or about 6% of the time. Strong pocket pairs are often good enough to win you the pot unimproved since they can flop overpairs, while smaller pairs are usually played because of their potential to flop sets.
When you are dealt a pocket pair, your odds of flopping a set are about 11.8%.
