The term pot limit is used to describe one of three major betting structures you’ll find in poker. In pot limit variations, the maximum size of your bet is dictated by the size of the pot.
Say there is $200 in the pot, and the action is to you. If you want to bet, regardless of how much you have in your stack, if you’re playing a pot limit game, the maximum you can bet is $200.
There are different forms of limits in games. In no-limit games, the only limit is the size of your own stack, while in fixed-limit games, you can only bet a predefined amount.
The most popular poker variation that is often played in a pot-limit format is Omaha. Hold’em is sometimes played as a pot limit before the flop and no limit after the flop, while pure pot limit Hold’em games are quite rare.
